Common questions
Where is my data stored?
On your phone. We don't sync to any cloud. See the privacy page for the full breakdown.
How do I cancel my subscription?
iOS: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Nightpenny → Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Free trials cancelled before the trial ends are never charged.
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles all refunds for purchases made through the App Store. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple declines your request and you think it's a mistake, email us and we'll help you appeal.
How do I log a night manually?
Settings → Data → Log a night manually. This is a premium feature; the free tier reads what Apple Health already has but can't add new records.
Why is my balance different from what Apple Health shows?
Apple Health shows total time asleep. Nightpenny shows a running 14-night balance relative to your target — a different number. See the methodology page for the math.
The app says I'm in debt, but I feel fine. What gives?
Subjective alertness is a poor gauge of cumulative sleep debt — Van Dongen's 2003 study explicitly shows that people feel the same on day 14 of restriction as day 3, even as their cognition keeps degrading. The balance is an objective accountant, not a mood ring. It's not saying you feel bad; it's saying the numbers add up to a negative.
Is this a medical device?
No. See the terms for the disclaimer and the methodology page for what the app does and doesn't do.
I revoked HealthKit. Now what?
The app still runs on the last synced data, and you can log nights manually. To re-grant: iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Nightpenny.
I want to delete all my data.
Delete the app. Every record is device-local; nothing persists anywhere else. Your Apple Health records are unaffected — they belong to you, not us.
Feature requests & bugs
The fastest path is an email. Nightpenny is open-design — progress is posted publicly to the project's GitHub repo. Roadmap items are filed there as issues.
