What Sleep Cycle does well

Sleep Cycle has been around since the iPhone could barely handle background audio, and they've polished the smart-alarm experience into something genuinely useful. If you've ever been startled awake by a phone alarm in deep sleep, you know how much worse the day starts. Sleep Cycle watches for movement and breathing patterns to fire the alarm during a light phase within a window you set — you wake up gently, on time, less of a wreck.

They also built a huge sleep-sound library (nature loops, binaural beats, story narration) that's a real win for people whose sleep onset is the hard part. And the snore-recording feature is a genuinely useful diagnostic if you suspect sleep apnea and need evidence to take to a doctor.

What Nightpenny adds

Nightpenny solves a different problem. Where Sleep Cycle focuses on the moment of waking, Nightpenny focuses on the fortnight around it:

  • The balance, not the night. A running 14-night total of how far you are from your sleep target. One bad night fades; chronic restriction stays visible. The metaphor is a savings account — short nights withdraw, good nights deposit.
  • A weekly review. Once a week, Pennie (the mascot) summarises the past seven nights and proposes a small repayment plan: a couple of earlier bedtimes, written into your iOS Calendar. Not nags — events. You either keep them or move them.
  • Recovery-discount math. Sleep Cycle shows "you slept 9 hours, that's good!" Nightpenny knows that after a four-hour deficit, a 9-hour night counted at face value would overstate the recovery. So it discounts past the first hour. The full formula is in the methodology.
  • HealthKit-only. Nightpenny doesn't listen to your bedroom. No microphone, no phone-on-mattress. It reads whatever Apple Watch or your iPhone's sleep schedule already records.
